BMI Calculator: What Your BMI Really Means and How to Improve It

What is BMI?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measurement that uses your height and weight to estimate body fat and categorize your weight status. It was developed by Adolphe Quetelet in the 1830s.

BMI Formula

BMI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)^2

Or in imperial: BMI = (Weight in lbs x 703) / (Height in inches)^2

BMI Categories

  • Below 18.5: Underweight
  • 18.5 - 24.9: Normal Weight
  • 25.0 - 29.9: Overweight
  • 30.0 - 34.9: Obese Class I
  • 35.0 - 39.9: Obese Class II
  • 40.0+: Obese Class III

  • Limitations of BMI

BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations:

  • Doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat
  • Doesn't account for bone density
  • May not be accurate for athletes with high muscle mass
  • Doesn't consider fat distribution
  • Not ideal for elderly or growing children

  • What to Do If Your BMI Is Too High

  • Consult with a healthcare provider
  • Create a sustainable calorie deficit
  • Increase physical activity gradually
  • Focus on whole foods and balanced nutrition
  • Track progress with multiple metrics, not just BMI

  • Better Health Metrics to Track

    1. Waist-to-Hip Ratio: Better predictor of cardiovascular risk

    2. Body Fat Percentage: More accurate fitness measure

    3. Waist Circumference: Indicates visceral fat levels

    4. Blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar
