GPA Calculator: How to Calculate Your GPA and Improve Your Grades
What is GPA?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is a standardized way of measuring academic achievement. Most US colleges use a 4.0 scale, where A = 4.0 and F = 0.0.
GPA Formula
GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours
Quality Points = Grade Point Value x Credit Hours (for each course)
Standard Grade Point Values
Step-by-Step GPA Calculation
Example: Calculate GPA for a semester
1. English (3 credits): A- = 3.7 x 3 = 11.1
2. Math (4 credits): B+ = 3.3 x 4 = 13.2
3. Science (3 credits): A = 4.0 x 3 = 12.0
4. History (3 credits): B = 3.0 x 3 = 9.0
Total Quality Points: 45.3
Total Credits: 13
GPA = 45.3 / 13 = 3.48
Weighted vs Unweighted GPA
Unweighted GPA: Standard 4.0 scale for all courses.
Weighted GPA: Gives extra points for honors/AP courses (up to 5.0 scale). An A in an AP class might count as 5.0 instead of 4.0.
